The Department employs specialized methods and state-of-the-art data analysis and modeling tools to support diverse customers in mission-critical industries to improve their decision-making, operational performance, evaluation of technology options, reliability of humans and systems, and reduction of error.​ The department consists of three groups that are diverse in their specializations, but complementary in the application of their research: the Statistics Group, the Human Factors Group, and the Instrumentation and Controls Group. While each has its own special focus, there are many application areas where they join forces in delivering an integrated solution. These synergies are seen in the unique links between the disciplines: Human Factors Engineering and Statistics join forces in the data analysis of human performance and reliability. Statistics and Controls collaborate in the data analysis of system performance and reliability. Controls and Human Factors collaborate in the analysis of the human elements in control system performance. Together, this leads to a unique capability in developing solutions for high-risk operations. Scientific and technical support for DOE-NE research programs, focusing on the application of human factors, instrumentation and controls, and statistical and data analysis for high-risk operations.
